Rockstar Games is celebrating Memorial Day weekend with a special sale on Grand Theft Auto 3 by lowering the price to $0.99, starting today through Monday, May 28th. The game normally retails for $4.99, so take advantage of this 80% off price before it’s too late.

Grand Theft Auto 3 is one of my all time favorite console games, and the Android port lived up to my expectations.  I’ve sunk hours into this game when I was traveling, and it’s still fun to pick up and play. The touch controls are great, but the game also supports controllers. I’d suggest the Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710 (Amazon has it for around $40) which connects with a USB receiver or the OnLive Wireless Controller that connects with Bluetooth.

In other Rockstar Games news, we are still waiting for the release of Max Payne. We have been waiting on the Android version since last year and we thought it would be released on April 26th, but it keeps getting delayed. Hopefully the game will be arriving any week now.

Welcome back to our regular column Android Gaming Weekly, where we recap all the new releases and highlights every Wednesday. We post small bits throughout the week related to Android games, but readers have requested a condensed summary that makes it easier to keep up with all the latest news. Read on for this week’s best in Android gaming.

Top 7 New Games This Week

We always try to find the top rated games each week, but now I’m going to limit my recommendations to the Top 7 games. The number of quality games comes and goes each week, but I felt like 7 suggestions was a nice odd number that I could achieve each week. Let me know what you think of the new format in the comments below.

Mass Effect Infiltrator

Developer says: “The fate of the galaxy lies in the balance. From the makers of the critically acclaimed Dead Space on Android comes an all-new, original Mass Effect storyline – made exclusively for mobile!”

Taylor says: I purchased this game yesterday and it’s awesome. The graphics are some of the best Android has to offer and the duck-and-cover gameplay is easy to pick up and play. I’ve only played the first two levels, but I’ll be spending a lot of time with this game over the coming week.

Men in Black 3

Developer says: “The official game of Men in Black 3, putting players in charge of the agency. We are the best-kept secret in the universe. We are Earth’s best, last, and only line of defense. We are above the system. Over it. Beyond it. We are “them”. We are “they”. We are the Men in Black.”

Taylor says: I’m not a huge fan of the freemium model and the gameplay looks uninspired, so I don’t think I’ll be spending any of my time on this. But it’s still MIB 3 and the early reviews are good, so I thought we should share it.

Death Racing

Developer says: “Challenge the extreme of speed and distance! Fast paced 3D racing game and easy to get started. Unlock most fantastic cars by skillful plays, and challenge the extreme of speed and distance!”

Taylor says: The developer Feeling Touch has a pretty good track record, and this game looks like it offered some fun twitch action. It’s free and it should make a good time waster.

100 Floors

Developer says: “Apple app store’s #1 game now on Android! Challenge Yourself and see if you can make it to the top! Advance to the next floor by solving the puzzle! 30 levels of puzzles are waiting to be solved! More levels on the way.”

Taylor says: We love a good puzzle game and this one is free. I never played the iOS version, but the dev claims it was the top puzzle game on Appls’s App Store some time back.

The Dictator: Wadiyan Games

Developer says: “The Wadiyan Games lets you step into the shoes of the General Aladeen and compete in his four favorite events – running, swimming, fencing and boxing. The game also features the ultimate finishing moves for each event. Additional sporting events and backdrops can be unlocked with in-app purchase. The app was blessed by General Aladeen and based on the upcoming Paramount Pictures feature film The Dictator in theaters nationwide.”

Taylor says: This game could suck, but I enjoyed the movie and thought this would make me laugh. Just installed it right now, but haven’t played any levels yet.

Gobber Ninja

Developer says: “Gobber is a chameleon able to perform the most incredible flying stunts! Gobber learned from his masters and needs your help to complete his training. Go through several events where speed, action and skill will be the keys to victory. Gobber has to catch all the stars and flies to surpass all challenges and reach the highest peaks!”

Taylor says: It’s a teenage ninja mutant lizard. Gameplay looks like an interesting mix of Cut the Rope with some extra platforming elements. The game is free so I’d say it’s worth a download if you like what you saw in the trailer.

Big Win Soccer

Developer says: “Welcome to world class football fun with Big Win Soccer! No matter what you call the “beautiful game”, Big Win Soccer is the game for everyone. CREATE your own unique dream team, COMPETE against opponents from around the world, WATCH your team battle it out on the pitch, BOOST your player’s passing, shooting, dribbling and other skills and get ready to hoist the Daily Trophy for the ultimate BIG WIN!”

Taylor says: Last week we featured Big Win Hockey and it was met with good reviews, so this week we wanted to share Big Win Soccer. Once again the game is free, so soccer fans should check it out.

Android Games Coming Soon

Angry Birds Heikki

This week Rovio launched a new teaser site for their upcoming game Angry Birds Heikki. Expect this latest chapter in the Angry Birds series to have a focus on Formula 1 racing as Heikki Kovalainen is one of the top racers in the circuit. Not much else is known about the game, but it should be released around June 18th.

Ubisoft’s Babel Rising 3D comes to Android on June 14th

PocketGamer reports that Ubisoft will bring their remake of the popular iOS game Babel Rising to Android on June 14th. In Babel Rising 3D, gamers take the role of a god attempting to stop the construction of a tower, by blasting construction workers with lightning and setting them on fire.

Pocket Planes

DroidGamers reports that NimbleBit will bring their “bitizens” back for another run in Pocket Plans. This follow up to Tiny Tower places the pixel people in an airline management simulation where they have to fly cargo to over 250 cities around the map. If you are a fan of Kariosoft games, then you might want to keep an eye on this.

Games I’m currently playing

Machinarium: We featured this game last week and I went ahead and purchased it after watching the trailer and reading the reviews. The early puzzles start off pretty easy, but the game gets hard real fast. There are clues that allow you to kind of cheat, but even with the help some of the puzzles take a lot of work to solve. The graphics, sound, and story are all amazing, so I’m sticking with this game until I finish it and find my robot girlfriend.

TegraZone game I’m looking forward to the most: Renaissance Blood THD

Renaissance Blood, formerly DaVinci, has been in development for a long time, but it should finally arrive on Tegra 3 devices in June. Korean developer Bridea is using the Unreal Engine 3 for this first person shooter and promises the highest graphics quality of any mobile game.

Kijong Kang, Executive Producer, described how they planned to take advantage of NVIDIA’s 4-PLUS-1 architecture by saying, “Renaissance Blood THD will leverage Tegra 3 for its multi-threading capabilities, so we can scale across all four CPU cores and deliver the ultimate console-quality performance.”

We haven’t seen a lot of info about the game released in recent months, so keep an eye on the TegraZone listing for updates. It’s possible the release date could be pushed back to the second half of 2012, but this looks like a game worth waiting on.

This week I’m testing out a new format. I always try to find the top rated games each week, but now I’m going to limit my recommendations to the Top 7 games. The number of quality games comes and goes each week, but I felt like 7 suggestions was a nice odd number that I could achieve each week. Let me know what you think of the new format in the comments below.

Machinarium

Developer says: “Discover the award-winning, steam punk world of Machinarium, navigating a clever little robot called Josef from the scrapheap into the city to save his robot girlfriend. Solve puzzles, quests, brain-teasers and mini-games to rid the city of the wicked Black Cap Brotherhood robots. Gorgeous hand-drawn graphics and animations bring the robot’s story to life, using unique comic bubbles and symbols to convey the plot.”

Taylor says: I’m going on a road trip this weekend, so I need a new puzzle game to burn up some time. The video sold me and I just handed over my $3.99. I’ll let you know how it was next week. Update: This game is awesome!

Mini Motor Racing

Developer says: “Mini Motor Racing plays like a favorite remote-controlled car showdown, combined with modern tech to nitro-boost your engines! Play multiplayer against up to four of your friends via WiFi! Race in campaign competitions for big rewards! Upgrade your skills and cars to win more! It’s all here in Mini Motor Racing.”

Taylor says: Reminds me of Micro Machines Racing, which I played for countless hours. Asking price is $1.99, but early reviews are good with a 4.3 average score.

Doraemon Fishing 2

Developer says: “You will start going fishing as Doreamon, Nobita or Shizuka and try to feed the beloved dinosaur Pisu. Besides casting the hook as deep as possible to collect coins and catch fishes while avoiding sharks, with the new gameplay, players will touch on fishing jumping out and flick them towards Pisu.”

Taylor says: I think I have a thing for Japanese game music. Game was so odd I just had to share it.

Big Win Hockey

Developer says: “CREATE your own unique dream team, COMPETE against opponents from around the world, WATCH your team battle it out on the ice, BOOST your player’s passing, shooting, skating and other skills and get ready to hoist the Daily Trophy for the ultimate BIG WIN!”

Taylor says: I’m not even a fan of hockey and this game looks awesome. It’s free so you have nothing to lose. I’m installing this on my Transformer Prime right now.

Lunar Racer

Developer says: “Strap on your moon boots and fire up your nitro boosters! The real space race is about to begin! Sure there’s racing games… but then there’s racing games with powerups! Ever tried racing with homing missiles, land mines, bubble shields and gravity thrusters? Yeah, didn’t think so!”

Taylor says: It’s from the developer of Super Stickman Golf and it’s free. Graphics look simple, but gameplay looks addicting. Average early review score is 4.8.

Plopp

Developer says: “Bubble-like circles, so called ‘Plopps’ emerge all over the place and start growing. When you tap on a Plopp, it explodes and a shockwave is unleashed. If other Plopps are hit by this shockwave they also explode causing big chain-reactions!”

Taylor says: This developer just uploaded four new games to the Google Play store and they all look pretty unique. Plopp looked the most interesting to me out of the bunch. It runs $1.25, so you might want to wait for more reviews to come in before you buy.

Ninja Slash!

Developer says: “Are you tired of always and only cut fruit? No problem! You’re one step away from starting the final cutting experience! Run, Jump and Slice at the same time!”

Taylor says: Odd combination of running and slicing gameplay looks hard as heck. I think this looks pretty fun, and it only costs $0.99. The developer has a good track record, so I think it’s a safe buy.

Android Games Coming Soon

Gameloft finally supports the ASUS Transformer Prime

This week Gameloft updated their popular MMORGP game Order & Chaos with a new dungeon called Sailen: The Lower City. More importantly, they finally added support for the ASUS Transformer Prime. Keep an eye on other Gameloft titles for future Transformer Prime support.

N.O.V.A. 3 dropping any day now

Speaking of Gameloft, we still expect NOVA 3 to be available any day now. The iOS version went on sale last week for $6.99 and we expect the Android version to cost the same. Check out the Gameloft Blog for first impressions of the game. (Gameloft, I will freaking love you if you release this on the Prime!)

Will Max Payne Mobile ever come to Android?

Another week and another delay. This game was supposed to be released in April, but it keeps getting pushed back. We were told several times that it would be available in previous weeks, but I honestly have no idea when it is coming out. Keep an eye on@RockstarGames for updates on the release. They seem pretty focused on Max Payne 3, so we might not hear anything for awhile now.

Shoot the Zombies arrives May 24th

It wouldn’t be right if we didn’t mention at least one zombie game this week. DroidGamers reports that Shoot the Zombies from Infinite Dreams will arrive on the Google Play Store around May 24th. This game is the sequel to Shoot the Birds, but this time you have to protect your pumpkin farm from a plague of undead, evil zombie birds.

Games I’m currently playing

Sonic 4 Episode II: This is the biggest release of the week so I just had to try it. I grew up on Nintendo and Mario, so I never really spent much time with Sonic. I played several Sonic games over the years, but I never finished one. I just got a wireless controller for the ASUS Transformer Prime and HTC One X, so look for my review in the coming weeks. Check out our Sonic 4 preview for a chance to win an Android tablet.

Sonic the Hedgehog has become one of the world’s best-known video game characters, with his series having sold more than 80 million copies. Gamers have normally enjoyed new releases of the series on home game consoles, but Sega is now releasing the latest Sonic 4 Episode II on mobile platforms at the same time. Read on as we celebrate the latest release and give away an ASUS Transformer Prime.

The Game

The Sonic 4 saga continues with Sonic’s beloved side kick, Miles “Tails” Power. Players can now experience the Sonic 4 saga as never before with the addition of a brand new engine; bringing you gameplay with updated physics and HD graphics.

“Sonic 4 Episode II is very special because we’ve integrated community feedback into the game.” said Haruki Satomi, Senior Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA of America. “We have some of the most loyal and dedicated fans and I hope they enjoy this next chapter in the Sonic 4 saga.”

For the first time Android gamers can enjoy an experience that is nearly identical to the PS3 and Xbox versions, and it comes at half the price. Players with Tegra 3 devices like the HTC One X or ASUS Transformer Prime will enjoy higher quality textures, better lighting and glow effects, and objects on screen that are absent from other mobile versions.

Episode 2 also features a collaborative multiplayer mode where players can team up with a friend via Bluetooth and take control of Sonic and Tails as they battle against Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic.

We just installed the game on our devices, so look for our full review in the coming weeks.

  • May 15: PS3, Playstation Network, PC digital download via Steam
  • May 16: TegraZone, Xbox Live Arcade
  • May 17: iTunes App Store

If you missed the first episode, grab it from the link below.

Benefits of Tegra 3

Tegra 3 offers gamers the most technically advanced mobile version.

  • The Tegra 3 version of Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode II is the most technically advanced mobile version of the game, a near mirror-image of the full-blown PS3 and Xbox versions of the game.
  • In fact, by enjoying a game with a gamepad (either with wired or Bluetooth controllers) and outputting the device to an television via HDMI, it’s the CLOSEST to the actual console experience you’ll get on a mobile device…. All with fast frame rates.
  • Sonic on Tegra 3 has dramatically higher quality textures, better lighting and glow effects, and objects on screen that are absent from other mobile versions.

Non-Tegra vs Tegra 3 version of Sonic 4.

Cloud gaming on Android is going to get a shot of adrenaline later this year. Today at the GPU Technology Conference, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang announced that their new Kepler chip was the world’s first GPU for cloud computing and it would be powering Gaikai‘s multi-platform gaming service.

Gaikai’s open cloud gaming platform offers a fully managed system that is optimized to deliver high-end video games and applications within seconds to all leading web browsers, operating systems, and devices. The Gaikai app is already available on Facebook and it will be coming to Android devices in the second half of this year.

Gaikai will work on on types of displays.

We have already seen other cloud gaming platforms like OnLive, but they suffered from lag and didn’t offer a wide variety of brand new games. Gaikai is focused on next-generation titles from the leading game developers and they say they have fixed the lag problem with the help of NVIDIA.

GeForce GRID will offer the same game experience as traditional consoles.

NVIDIA’s Kepler chip allows for virtualized GPUs so a single server can power thousands of low-latency remote displays. Gaikai has designed custom servers and distributed them in data centers across the globe, and they claim to offer the lowest latency, highest quality experiences possible.

To demonstrate the technology in action Gaikai showed off an upcoming game called Hawken that was running on the ASUS Transformer Prime. This first-person shooter mech game looked amazing and it easily topped anything we have ever seen on Android. The developer Adhesive Games says Hawken will be available on December 12th, but we expect Gaikai and other games should hit Android before then.

Right now we don’t have a release date for Gaikai on Android, but I highly suggest you play with their Facebook app for a quick demo. I just wasted a good 30 minutes playing Dead Rising 2, and I can’t wait for this service to come to Android devices. Check out Gaikai’s promo video below to get a feel of some of the other games that are already available to play.

Does this look like a service you would pay to play on Android?

Welcome back to our regular column Android Gaming Weekly, where we recap all the new releases and highlights every Wednesday. We post small bits throughout the week related to Android games, but readers have requested a condensed summary that makes it easier to keep up with all the latest news. Read on for this week’s best in Android gaming.

New Games This Week

Zombro

I smell a sleeper hit. “Zombro is a puzzle game with a simple goal: Detach Zombro’s basic elements (torso, legs, and braiiiiiinnz) to jump, dodge, and roll while making sure he finishes each level in one piece!” The game features 50 puzzles, 30 items to collect, and you can outfit Zombro in cool gear (plus customize his brain).

JAZZ: Trump’s Journey

We are in New Orleans this week for CTIA Wireless, so I thought it was appropriate to share a game about Jazz music. “My name is Trump and I’m a jazz man, and this is my story.” This unique platform game parallels with the real story of Louis Armstrong and follows the birth of jazz.

Ricky Carmichael’s Motorcross

“Ricky Carmichael Motocross Matchup Pro is an all-new racing game where it’s just you against online competitors from around the globe! This includes the chance to bang bars with some the of best in the business, including Ricky Carmichael himself!”

SAS: Zombie Assault 3

Based on the popular flash game by Ninja Kiwi, but completely rebuilt and optimized for Android, SAS: Zombie Assault 3 offers 4 player co-op multiplayer for free. Need I say more?

Ninja Chicken Ooga Booga

Lots of people like Oven Break last week and this title appears to offer similar gameplay. “Still on a mission to be the best ninja ever, our funky-chicken-who-thinks-he-is-a-ninja has broken free from the farm and into the wilderness!”

Destiny Defense: Angel or Devil

“Destiny Defense: Angel or Devil is the addictive action-strategy defense game with a variety of attack systems and 2 unique storylines. By choosing each side, Angel or Devil, you will be able to feel double thrill and fun as you go through different game plays.”

Zombie Granny

“Zombie Granny is an addictively fun puzzle game that combines zany characters, dazzling animated effects of destruction, and tricky mechanical puzzles for a ghoulishly entertaining good time!”

Android Games Coming Soon

Men in Black 3

Men in Black hits theaters May 25th and Gameloft has a new Android game to coincide with the release. This week they released a teaser video which shows a brief preview, but doesn’t provide many details on the gameplay. Look for Men in Black 3 to debut as a freemium game.

N.O.V.A. 3

Another day, another N.O.V.A. 3 teaser video. This time we get a look at some of the solo mission action. No release date has been given yet, but we expect it to land on select Android devices later this month.

Frontline Commando 2.0

Glu Mobile’s Frontline Commando has already been downloaded over 5 million times, and now they are gearing up to release version 2.0. The latest update should add several new levels, include new powerups, and end with a massive boss battle.

Asphalt 7: Heat

Last week at the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event, Asphalt 7 was briefly teased. This is Gameloft’s most popular racing game, so we have high hopes for the latest chapter in the series. We don’t have many details on the game yet, but we could know more when Samsung releases the Galaxy S III around May 29th.

Max Payne Mobile

Rockstar Games keeps pushing back the release date of Max Payne Mobile for Android, but tomorrow could be the big day. We heard a rumor it could come out at midnight, but Rockstar Games has been quiet on the matter. If you really want this game then check the Google Play store late tonight, but don’t be surprised if it was delayed again.

Games I’m currently playing

Dance Legend: This game came out last month, but I finally took the time to sit down and play it for awhile. I’m not a dancer, but I have always enjoyed music games and Dance Legend was a real blast to play. The game is free and includes several songs to get you started, but additional song packs will cost you money.

NBA Jam: EA Mobile finally updated NBA Jam to support more devices and I’ve been playing it non-stop the last couple days. The controls translate pretty well to a phone or tablet, and it’s just as fun as I remember when I was a little kid. I’m currently playing through the campaign mode trying to defeat every team and unlock big head mode. We are crossing our fingers that EA will eventually add an online multiplayer mode.

gdgt-live-sxsw

Back in March we partied with gdgt Live at SXSW and had a blast, but we know a lot of you were not able to make it out to Texas. That’s okay, because the gdgt crew is traveling across the country and they have a bunch more tour dates already lined up. The next gdgt LIVE event takes place in Chicago (#2 city for Android nerds) on Friday, May 11.

If you’ve never heard of gdgt Live, it’s free, all-ages and open to the public. These shows provide a great opportunity to meet people from the companies you love, check out their latest gadgets and hang out with your peers.

For this show they will have new gdgt t-shirts and new gdgt-branded iPhone cases from Speck for the first several hundred folks who join us, so make sure you get there early. (Yo Speck, where’s the Android love?) Of course, they’ll also have a whole bunch of gadgets to win — but only if you show up.

We can’t all make it to the show, but Anthony, Chuck, Sean and I do plan to attend. If you’re coming, too, leave us a comment below and be sure to track us down and say hi while you’re there.

Please tell your friends and help spread the word on all your favorite social sites. The official Twitter hashtag is #gdgtChicago. Head over to the gdgt Live Chicago page for the current list of sponsors.

Where: The Tribune Building, 435 N Michigan Ave, Chicago
When: Friday, May 11 – 7:00pm to 10:00pm
Why: Because we know you love gadgets as much as we do!

nova-3-630

Gameloft thinks N.O.V.A. 3 will be their best game to date and they have pulled out all the stops to make sure you know that. We already saw three teaser videos released last week and they are back again with a new clip that shows all the outstanding visual improvements you can expect.

Executive producer, Arnaud Bonnard, walks us through a new 90 second video that shows off a ton of eye candy tricks including depth of field, motion blur, distortion effect, normal mapping, dynamic lighting, shadows and particles.

We don’t have an exact release date, but Gameloft has said the game will debut on Android in May. Some were worried that Gameloft might ruin this game by making it a freemium title, but Gameloft has said it will be a paid title, with a retail price around $6.99.

Has Gameloft convinced you to buy N.O.V.A. 3 yet? I’ve seen enough to hand over my money.
