Samsung, have you learned nothing from the past couple years worth of advertising failures? You could have done so much with your Super Bowl ad, but you didn’t. You did nothing but brag about a stylus, and make fun of one of your main competitor’s customers. Samsung blew a monstrous opportunity yesterday to show off why people all over the world love the Galaxy Note.

What they did

The first thirty seconds of Samsung’s Super Bowl ad are dedicated to showing people standing in line complaining. With one of the few product related dialogue lines during that thirty seconds being, “It’s the new Samsung Galaxy Note, It’s got a pen?!”

The next minute is dedicated to an old song from The Darkness, and who knows how many thousands of dollars worth of dancing and stunts. Oh, and some people are using the Note’s camera.

The end of the 90 second commercial shows the Note, with a coming soon sign right next to Best Buy’s logo.

If you had never heard of the Galaxy Note, what would you assume it is? A tablet with a stylus? That has a camera? Are either of those features compelling enough to drive the average consumer to investigate? Or will they be busy talking about how they used to have a Palm Pilot with a stylus?

It looks likes Samsung may have left consumers with more questions than answers. And nothing compelling enough to push them to find out more.

What they should have done

The Galaxy Note doesn’t just feature a stylus. The Note’s S Pen is paired with a Wacom brand digitizer. A brand recognized by millions upon millions of professionals in all sorts of media and art related industries. Samsung really should have shown that off.

They should have talked about how fluid using the S Pen is. And how it’s nothing like the styluses of yesteryear. They should have shown off how it’s pressure sensitive, all the different brush strokes you can use, and the different applications the S Pen works with.

Then, they should have mentioned how the large ultra crisp display is excellent for viewing and editing photos and video. A perfect compliment to the level of detail the S Pen is capable of.

Oh, and about that display. They need to make sure everyone knows about the rigorous testing done to make sure it was just the right size. Perfect for the Samsung exclusive technology built into the Note. Great for reading books and watching movies. Just big enough to give you a roomy tablet-like experience. Yet still small enough to use as a phone. Because you know, the Note is a phone after all.

Samsung could have done a lot with their Super Bowl ad. But they did practically nothing. Maybe next year?

Madden 12

Super Bowl XLVI is coming this weekend and EA Mobile has lowered the price of Madden NFL 12 to $0.99 to celebrate the big game. Most of EA’s Android games have been disappointing compared to their iOS clones, and Madden appears no different. It’s not compatible with the new phones (like the Galaxy Nexus) and many users are reporting problems downloading the game’s content after their initial purchase.

However, some people seem to genuinely enjoy the game and it is $4 cheaper than the normal price, so you might want to give it a shot while the sale lasts. Just remember to visit the Android Market page and check out the user reviews filtered for your device to see what people are saying about the compatibility.

And for those of you without a credit card, check out the free NFL Pro 2012 from Gameloft. Android Market also has a list of Official Super Bowl Apps that include some fun games like NFL Kicker and NFL Flick Quarterback.

Samsung just released a teaser video for their upcoming Super Bowl XLVI ad. This is the company’s first Super Bowl ad, so they decided to go all out with a 90 second spot, one of the longest of the big game. Samsung previously announced that the Bobby Farrelly, known for directing famous comedy films There’s Something About Mary, Dumb and Dumber and Kingpin, would produce the ad and it would run during the 4th quarter.

As you can see from the clip below, the ad will continue Samsung’s The Next Big Thing campaign that pokes fun at Apple fans waiting in line for the iPhone 4S. We already know that Samsung will use the spot to promote the AT&T Galaxy Note, which goes on pre-order February 5th. Based on the comments from our previous article, it looks like people are stoked about the ad but they are still unsure about their feelings for the Galaxy Note.

Make sure to tune in Sunday at 6:30 PM to catch the big game and then come back to let us know what you think. For those of who can’t find the game on a local affiliate, it will also be streamed live on NBC.com. Samsung is also encouraging their fans to visit their Facebook page and vote the add as one of their favorites for the Super Bowl.

Any guesses what happens next?

Planning to watch the New York Giants defeat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl on Sunday? The NFL just released their official Super Bowl XLVI Guide to the Android Market where it’s free to download. It appears the app has a lot of features geared towards those lucky enough to be in Indianapolis this weekend, but there are plenty of other goodies for those watching from home.

Highlights of the app include:

  • A detailed guide to local restaurants, nightlife, and official Super Bowl events
  • A 3D map of Indianapolis and an interactive 3D map of Lucas Oil Stadium for gameday
  • You can follow all of the social media buzz with NFL Huddle
For those who are not a fan of American Football, you still might want to tune into the 4th quarter when Samsung will unveil their next big ad. Also, don’t forget to pick your team in our first annual Android Bowl, where you can win a free Asus Transformer Prime powered by Tegra 3.

How much money is Samsung spending on their first Super Bowl ad? That’s the question many wondered after Samsung revealed today that their 4th quarter ad would be one of the longest in the game at 90 seconds.

Samsung Mobile shared on their social channels today that they would be “launching a device so exciting that only the biggest game in America can do it justice.” That device is the AT&T Galaxy Note, which goes on pre-order for $299 this Super Bowl Sunday, February 5th.

Sources have reported that NBC is charging companies $3.5 million for a 30 second spot and over $6 million for a 60 second spot. That means Samsung should shell out around $9 million to promote the Galaxy Note on AT&T, a carrier that is dominated by the Apple iPhone.

We don’t know what the content of the ad will include, but most have assumed it will follow The Next Big Thing series that have been playing in full rotation on TV.

In an interview with AllThingsD, Samsung marketing executive Younghee Lee said she wants consumers to be “obsessed with the company and its products.” Lee went on to say that “People are obsessed with Apple. It’s time to change people’s attention.”
